If I've got cones falling off my vine, should I be picking the rest??

Isn't kind of early for harvest?

The folks at Freshops say:
"At maturity, the hop aroma is at its strongest and is measured by crushing a cone and smelling it. The yellow lupulin glands in the cone become much more evident and plump looking when magnified.

The cone will develop a drier, papery feel and in some varieties a lighter color as it matures. Some browning of the lower bracts is a good sign of ripeness. Squeeze the cones as they develop and you will notice they become more light and resilient rather than green and hard."

Falling off?!?! thats strange. Are they still green? I've never had them just fall off. But i have left a bunch on there until they completely dried up, turned brown and died, but they never fell off.

I usually pick them when they are still mostly green (except for maybe the very tips of the cone) and they start to feel pretty dry.

When the buds first start to grow do they look more flower-like and then close up to form the cone or are they cones right from the start? The ones on my hop plants seem to be opened up like flowers and I am hoping as they mature they will become cones....

Blossom drop on hop bines? Not sure man... As Jimmy~~James mentioned, I've had them brown up, but never fall off.

The rhizomes I planted last year started early with some nice growth but due to lack of regular watering kind of did not go any where this year. Green Thumb me heck no.

So I have not seen any cones Sad

ok, ppl. so yeah...each day i come home, there are 2-3 more cones that have fallen. I got the step stool out today so i could do a little inspection and everything looks ok. last weekend when it was balls hot i noticed that some cones were getting brown and shriveling up.

upon inspection today, the hops do appear to be papery and dry, just not really brown. there may be tiny tiny bits of brown.

i remember talking to Schirmey and he said he's had years where he got multiple harvests in one season. i'm thinking this may be the case. i think these are about good and i see another round coming in.

so what do you all think now? should i harvest round 1?

Yes, harvest round one. It is not uncommon at our latitude to get multiple crops.

Sweet!
I've already had to harvest some of my Nuggets about 1 ounce (dry). And will have to harvest some cascades pretty soon... Otherwise most of my other plants are really lagging this year after having transplanted them.

Not to high jack the tread but I have a few questions about my plant. My plant is sending off secondary shoots off of the main vine. Some of the shoots are growing much better than the main vine. Should I be clipping some of these secondary shoots off the vine? I still dont have any flowering on the plant yet.

Nope let them grow. Just keep clipping any new shoots coming from the ground.

Should I keep the vines separate or can I let them run up the same piece of twine?

I let them grow up the same string ... or even another string nearly... as long as you dont mix up your hop varieties.
